The City of Dallashas been practicing sustainability for many years within City Departments. Examples include DWU has water conservation programs, SAN has greatly increased recycling, and EBS is a leader in the purchase and use of alternative fuels. Development Services issued ForwardDallas! a comprehensive land use plan that includes sustainability. Additionaly, the City has adopted an Environmental Management System to combine its environmental compliance programs with sustainability in order to have an enhanced tracking and accountability system for the environment

Proposed sustainability initiatives are
  • collect data across City Departments on Sustainability and report results
  • stay abreast of current scientific advancements in sustainability and environmental issues
  • maintain peers within other Cities across the US on sustainability
  • review and apply for grants to further the City's sustainability program
  • maintain a sustainability working group at the City of Dallas
  • work with Development Services on implementing the environmental components of ForwardDallas!
  • coordinate with local and national environmental groups on the City's programs
  • apply for awards, seek recognition and prepare press releases in conjunction with PIO on sustainability
  • and manage the new Sustainable Skyline grant with EPA
